The rules YouTube actually enforces

Chapters look simple, but YouTube only turns them on if every condition is met. Break one and the whole video silently loses its chapters:

• The first timestamp must be 0:00 — chapters have to start at the very beginning.
• At least three chapters — two isn’t enough.
• Each chapter at least 10 seconds long — timestamps closer than that are rejected.
• In ascending order — times must go forward, never back.

This tool checks all four as you type and formats the output so the timestamps are clean (M:SS, or H:MM:SS past an hour). Paste the result anywhere in your video’s description and YouTube builds the chapter bar automatically.

How to use it

1. Type or paste your chapters — the time and a title on each line, in any order (1:24 The idea or The idea 1:24, dashes are fine).
2. Watch the rule check. Anything red tells you exactly what YouTube will reject.
3. When all four are green, press Copy chapters and paste into your description.

Why chapters are worth the effort

Chapters add a clickable list under the progress bar and label the segments viewers hover over. They make a long video easier to navigate, can surface “key moments” in search, and tend to improve how long people stay — because they can jump straight to what they came for instead of leaving.

Frequently asked questions

Do the chapters have to be at the top of the description?

No — YouTube finds a valid timestamp list anywhere in the description. Many creators put them lower, under the intro text. As long as the list itself follows the rules, it works.

Why did my chapters disappear?

Almost always one broken rule: the first line wasn’t 0:00, there were fewer than three, or two timestamps were less than 10 seconds apart. The rule check above will show which one.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The list is formatted entirely in your browser — nothing is sent or saved.
