Why Your YouTube Chapters Aren't Showing (and How to Fix Them)

You added timestamps to your description, saved, refreshed — and there's still no chapter bar under the video. Chapters are one of the few YouTube features that are all-or-nothing: get every condition right and they appear automatically; miss a single one and none of them show, with no error message to tell you why. The good news is there are only four rules, and the failure is almost always one of them.

The four rules chapters must follow

For YouTube to turn your timestamp list into chapters, all of the following have to be true:

The first timestamp is 0:00. Chapters must begin at the very start of the video. A list that starts at 0:15 is ignored entirely.
There are at least three chapters. Two timestamps aren't enough — you need three or more.
Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Two timestamps closer than ten seconds apart break the whole list.
The timestamps go in order. Times must ascend; a timestamp that jumps backwards invalidates the list.

Every "my chapters disappeared" case comes down to one of these. Usually it's the first rule — someone writes an intro line before the timestamps and the first 0:00 ends up not being first — or the third, when two early sections are only a few seconds apart.

How to find which rule broke

Reading a timestamp list by eye, it's hard to spot that two of them are nine seconds apart, or that one is slightly out of order. Formatting details that trip people up

Where the list lives. The timestamps don't have to be at the top of the description — YouTube finds a valid list anywhere in it. Many creators put them below an intro paragraph.
The 0:00 title. Give the first chapter a real label like "Intro" rather than leaving it blank; a bare 0:00 with no title reads awkwardly in the chapter bar.
Consistent format. Mixing 1:05 and 1.05 or stray characters can stop a line being recognised as a timestamp. Keep them clean and colon-separated.

Why chapters are worth fixing

Chapters add a clickable list and label the segments viewers hover over on the progress bar. They make a longer video far easier to navigate, can surface as "key moments" in search, and tend to help retention — people jump to the part they came for instead of giving up and leaving. Do I need exactly three chapters, or more?

Three is the minimum. More is fine and often better for a long video — just keep each one at least ten seconds long and in order.
